I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.
Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.
Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.
Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.
Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.
It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

Reaction upon finishing the book: Woah, that was dark and different but extremely awesome!

I read Marie Lu's debut Legend quite a while ago and I loved that series, so when I saw that she was bringing out a new series I was ecstatic.

The Young Elites was different to say the least, it was very dark but thrilling. Our heroine, Adelina is an anti-hero in this story, she's very bitter and has a lot of pent up darkness inside her that has been building up over the years, it's pretty freaky. When we were reading from Adelina's point of view it was interesting as she is definitely not your typical hero in the story as I am sure you know, whilst reading her thoughts at times I was uncomfortable and pretty creeped out to the max, but in a good way. I loved figuring out and learning what was going on in her mind.
“I am Adelina Amouteru. I belong to no one. On this night, I swear to you that I will rise above everything you’ve ever taught me. I will become a force that this world has never known. I will come into such power that none will dare hurt me again.”
Enzo, also know as the love interest in this book was captivating.
"So. Tell me little wolf. Do you want to punish those who have wronged you?"
I don't know what to say about him other than he's intimidating and breathtaking.
And..I love him.

What I loved most about all the characters was that none of them were good but none of them were bad, it wasn't all black and , they were all so fascinating and intriguing.

One of my favourite things while I was reading the book was reading the little quotes at the beginning of each chapter, normally I don't read them but in this case I did and I enjoyed it.

My final thoughts: This book was definitely a great start to an interesting new series, I recommend this book to high fantasy lovers, and people who want something more refreshing than the typical good hero beats bad villain. This book was dark but it gave a uniqueness to it.

“Be true to yourself. But that's something everyone says and no one means. No one wants you to be yourself. They want you to be the version of yourself that they like.”
“Embellish your flaws. They will turn into your assets.”
“No one ever gives my their kindness without hoping for something in exchange.
Are they any different? Are they all the same? They all want to use you, use you, use you until they get what they want, and then they will toss you aside.”
“The only way to clamp down on my energy is to erase my emotions, and so I fold them each away, one by one. My sorrow turns to anger, then to ice-cold fury. My soul curls in one itself in defense. I am gone. I am truly gone.
I am not sorry.”
“Fear creates the strongest illusions. Everyone has darkness inside them, however hidden.”
“Some hate us, think us outlaws to hang at the gallows. Some fear us, think demons to burn at the stake,Some worship us, think us children of the gods. But all know us.”
“Passion is bright and warm... But passion has a dark side too. It links with fear. Our hearts fill with terror at the thought of harm coming to our loved ones, don't they?”
